While Paris is known for its stunning architecture, it also boasts a number of gorgeous parks and gardens that are perfect for Paris family photography. These green spaces are especially great for families with very little children, as they can run around safely (while I run after them capturing all the jumps and giggles).
With so many beautiful options, how do you choose the perfect Parisian park to capture those family sessions? This guide will explore some of the most enchanting parks, highlighting their unique features and helping you select the ideal setting for your family photo shoot.
Jardin des Tuileries
- Key attractions: Situated between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde, the Jardin des Tuileries offers a centrally located and formally beautiful setting. Its grand fountains, elegant sculptures, and the iconic view towards the Louvre provide a quintessential Parisian backdrop.
- Why it’s great for family photos: This is hands down my favourite park for family photo sessions. The Tuileries’ flat terrain and wide pathways make it easily accessible for families with strollers. The open spaces allow children to move around, and the historical significance adds a layer of cultural richness to your photographs. And if we’re lucky, we might even get a glimpse of the garden goats.
- Things to keep in mind: Being a central location, the Tuileries can get quite crowded, especially during peak tourist season, which is why I always recommend taking photos in the morning or late afternoon. However, even in the middle of the day, I’m always able to find some great spots for family photos.

Jardin du Palais Royal
- Features: A secluded and elegant garden enclosed by the Palais Royal’s arcades. It features a central fountain, meticulously manicured flowerbeds, contemporary art installations (like Buren’s black and white striped columns), and a sense of hidden tranquility in the heart of the city.
- Why it’s Great for Families: The enclosed nature of the garden offers a sense of safety for younger children. The surprising contrast between the classical architecture and the modern art provides unique and visually interesting backdrops. The central fountain can be a focal point, and the surrounding arcades offer shade and potential for interesting framing.
- Things to Keep in Mind: It’s smaller than some of the other major parks and the lawns aren’t accessible. While enclosed, it can still attract visitors, especially during peak hours. The lanes of trees look beautiful when they’re covered in green leaves, but are not quite as aesthetic during the winter months where they’re just bare branches.

Jardin du Luxembourg
- Iconic features: The Jardin du Luxembourg, a sprawling oasis in the heart of Paris, exudes classic elegance. The majestic Medici Fountain, with its mythological sculptures and serene reflection pool, offers a timeless backdrop. The expansive Grand Bassin, where children often sail toy boats, adds a touch of playful charm.
- Why it’s great for family photography: Luxembourg Gardens caters perfectly to families. Its wide, manicured lawns provide ample space for children to run and play freely, while the dedicated playgrounds offer engaging entertainment. The historical statues and architectural details add a touch of sophistication to your photographs, creating a beautiful contrast with the natural surroundings.
- Things to keep in mind: The main area in front of the fountain and historical building gets very crowded on warm, sunny days, so I definitely recommend doing a morning session.

Parc Monceau
- Main features: An elegant and relatively peaceful park with picturesque pathways, a serene pond, charming architectural follies (like a miniature temple, Egyptian pyramid, and Corinthian columns), beautiful landscaping, and diverse tree species. This park is relatively close to the city center, but is mostly used by locals, giving it that extra Parisian charm.
- Why it’s great for family sessions: The park offers a relaxed atmosphere for photos and the architectural follies provide unique and interesting backdrops that add character to portraits. The pond and pathways create lovely scenes for candid moments. It often feels less overwhelming than larger, more central parks.
- Things to Keep in Mind: While spacious, it’s not as vast as some other parks. It can get busy on weekends, especially with joggers. Some of the architectural elements might be off-limits for climbing or close interaction.
Parc des Buttes-Chaumont
- Unique Landscape: While quite out of the way, Parc des Buttes-Chaumont does offer some interesting backdrop and dramatic views. Its hilly terrain, cascading waterfalls, and the picturesque Temple de la Sibylle perched atop a cliff offer breathtaking and unique photo opportunities. This park feels like a hidden world within the city (but I recommend this park only if you’re already living nearby it and don’t plan on doing the session in other locations).
- Why it’s great for family photo shoots: Children will love exploring the winding paths, discovering hidden grottos, and crossing charming bridges. The diverse landscape provides a variety of stunning backdrops, from sweeping panoramic views of Paris to intimate moments captured by the water.
- Considerations: Be mindful that Buttes-Chaumont involves more walking and uneven terrain, which might be a consideration for families with very young children or those with mobility issues. However, the visual rewards are well worth the effort for many.
Smaller Gems for your Family Photography
- Square du Vert-Galant: Located at the western tip of Île de la Cité (near Notre Dame de Paris), this small, triangular park offers a uniquely romantic setting with views along the Seine. It’s particularly lovely in the spring and summer.
- Jardin des Plantes: Offering a different kind of backdrop, the Jardin des Plantes boasts beautiful botanical gardens, greenhouses, and even a small zoo, providing a diverse and engaging environment for a family photoshoot.
Parc de Saint-Cloud (just on the outskirts of Paris)
- Features: Sprawling former royal estate with expansive lawns, stunning panoramic views of Paris (including the Eiffel Tower), elegant fountains (like the Grande Cascade), historical architecture, woodlands, and walking trails. Like a smaller, less touristy version of the Versailles gardens.
- Why it’s great for families: The sheer size offers ample space for children to run and play freely. The diverse landscapes provide a variety of backdrops, from formal elegance to natural settings. The panoramic views of Paris offer a unique and impressive element to family photos. It often feels less crowded than central Parisian parks.
- Things to keep in mind: It’s located outside the Paris city limits, requiring a short train or car ride. The park is quite large, so be prepared for some walking. While beautiful, it lacks the immediate, central Parisian backdrop found in parks within the city.

Tips for Choosing the Right Park for Your Family Photo Session
- Consider the age and energy levels of your children: For families with very young children, a park with playgrounds and easy access might be preferable. For older children, a park with more space to explore could be ideal.
- Think about the desired aesthetic and backdrop: Do you envision classic Parisian elegance, dramatic landscapes, or a more modern feel? Let your desired aesthetic guide your choice.
- Factor in accessibility and transportation: Consider how easily you can reach the park with your family, especially if you have strollers or are using public transport.
